Description

Apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF) is a mitochondrial protein that translocates to the nucleus upon induction of apoptosis. It has been demonstrated that AIF causes DNA fragmentation and chromatin condensation, and induces the release of cytochrome c and caspase-9 from mitochondria. Release of AIF from mitochondria was shown to be prevented by over-expression of Bcl-2, a protein involved in mitochondrial permeability.
