Description

This antibody recognizes the CD20 antigen, which is a phosphoprotein with a molecular weight of 35-37 kDa depending of phosphorylation state. CD20 is only expressed on B-lineage cells concomitantly with surface IgM. The CD20 antigen is lost prior to differentiation into plasma cells. No extracellular ligand for CD20 has yet been identified. Indirect evidence suggests that CD20 functions as a B-cell calcium channel subunit. The expression of CD20 in disparate cell types generates a qualitatively similar channel activity to that found endogenously in B-cells. This is consistent with observations that CD20 regulates cell cycle progression and exists on the cell surface as a homo-oligomer. Monoclonal antibodies against CD20 are used to treat people who have B-cells non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Various therapeutical forms of these antibodies are known as Rituximab (Mabthera), Britumomab (Zevalin) and Tositumomab (Bexxar). The Abbiotec antibody can be used for detecting CD20 in flow cytometry.
