DescriptionThis antibody recognizes the CD5 antigen (T1 antigen) which is expressed on all mature T-cells, most thymocytes, and a subset of mature B-cells. Based on stimulatory effects of monoclonal antibodies, CD5 may be involved in signal transduction. Upon T-cell activation, CD5 is phosphorylated on tyrosine residues. CD5 crosslinking induces extracellular calcium mobilisation, tyrosine phosphorylation of intracellular proteins and DAG production. It may serve as a dual receptor, giving stimulatory or inhibitory signals depending both on the cell type and development stage. In thymocytes and B1a cells, CD5 leads to inhibitory signals, whereas in peripheral mature T-lymphocytes it acts as a costimulatory signal receptor. The antibody can be used for detecting CD5 in flow cytometry, frozen tissue sections, western blotting and immunoprecipitation. It also reacts with rhesus monkey lymphocytes.
